The 7-Day Declutter Challenge

Decluttering feels huge when you look at the whole house at once. So don't! This challenge breaks it into seven small wins, one area a day, about 20 to 30 minutes each. By next week, you'll have more space, fewer "where did I put that?" moments, and a home that's easier to keep clean.

Before you start: the 4-box method

Grab four boxes or bags and label them:

  1. Keep: it's used, loved, and has a home.
  2. Donate / Sell: it's in good shape but not for you anymore.
  3. Trash / Recycle: it's broken, expired, or past its prime.
  4. Relocate: it belongs in a different room.

Golden rule: At the end of each day, the donate bag goes in your car and the trash goes out. Don't let your boxes become new clutter!

Day 1: Kitchen counters & junk drawer

  • Clear everything off the counters and put back only what you use daily.
  • Empty the junk drawer, toss dead batteries, dried-up pens, and mystery keys.
  • Add a small tray or divider so the drawer stays organized.

Day 2: Pantry & fridge

  • Check expiration dates and toss anything past its date.
  • Group like items together: snacks, baking, canned goods, breakfast.
  • Move older items to the front so they get used first.

Day 3: Bathroom & under the sink

  • Toss expired medicine (follow local take-back guidance), old makeup, and empty bottles.
  • Keep only one or two of each product in active use and store the backups together.
  • Use a bin or caddy under the sink to corral cleaning supplies.

Day 4: Bedroom closet

  • Pull out anything you haven't worn in a year, anything that doesn't fit, and anything you don't love.
  • Turn all hangers backward. As you wear items, flip them around. In a few months, you'll see what you actually wear.
  • Fill one donate bag before you stop.

Day 5: Dressers & nightstands

  • Empty one drawer at a time and fold everything in a way that makes it easy to see.
  • Clear your nightstand down to the essentials: a lamp, a book, and a charger.
  • Pair up socks and say goodbye to the singles.

Day 6: Living room & entryway

  • Go through shelves, baskets, and the coffee table.
  • Sort through shoes and coats by the door, and store the off-season ones elsewhere.
  • Recycle old magazines, catalogs, and mail.

Day 7: Paper pile & "hot spot" sweep

  • Sort mail and papers into Act on, File, and Shred/Recycle.
  • Revisit any spot that started getting cluttered again this week.
  • Drop off your donations and celebrate! 🎉

Keep it going

  • One in, one out: when something new comes home, something old goes.
  • 10-minute weekly sweep: pick one drawer or shelf each week.
  • Donation bag on standby: keep a bag in a closet and drop it off when it's full.
